Opening Doors Project 2016
Esteem Toward Women Campaign – Over the last few months, Lisa McAskill and Elizabeth Ellames from NOW Leadeship Inc. donated their time and expertise to create a short video to support the #OpeningDoors campaign.
On the video, women tell their story through the painting of doors – Traditional Art stories which are all based on the Artist’s individual culture and belief system, traditions and customs. The intention of this process was to help the women move beyond the constraints of domestic violence by taking small steps toward self-empowerment.
And on November 25th Prema Joy’s wonderful idea became a reality – The Opening Doors for domestic violence art auction and exhibition raised $9,400…tremendous effort and a wonderful job by the auctioneer Dale Gray.
The Aboriginal women of Nunga Mi:Minar in partnership with Aboriginal women living in the Community and Marra Dreaming lovingly restored old doors through the medium of paint and traditional art.
Esteem Toward Women – Event 2016
On 11th Oct it was International Day of the Girl and NOW Leadership Inc celebrated in Adelaide with a fundraising event for UNWomen National Committee Australia, a positive event with remarkable guest speakers on the topic Esteem Towards Women and an audience who connected with this theme and participated in the rich conversation that emerged. Thank you to everyone who was involved – our guest speakers Genevieve, Heather, Kadija, Mia and Jonathan and also our generous supporters who donated beautiful prizes for our guests – Davroe, Adelaide Festival Centre, Next Generation, Yalumba, Bracegirdles, and Souzi D Wilson. Also big thanks to our amazing cameraman Harvey Newline Harman and the fantastic staff at The Lion Hotel.
Our Esteem Toward Women campaign in 2016 was a global event to support and ensure a world free of discrimination for women, young women, and girls.
What does Esteem Toward Women mean to you?
Why do you believe Esteem Toward Women is important?
How can we demonstrate more Esteem Toward Women?
Women and girls make up more than half the world’s population and are often more deeply impacted than men and boys by poverty, climate change, food shortage, lack of healthcare, and economic uncertainty.
Women and girls contributions and leadership are central to finding a solution –
NOW Leadership Inc. and UN Women are focused on girls being a big part of our future. While girls hold the potential to become leaders and can effect change, their empowerment can be hindered by factors such as unwanted pregnancy, forced early marriage, gender-based violence and limited access to higher education and health services.
Funds raised at this event will support UN Women National Committee Australia.
